How to Prevent Thieves from Breaking into Electricity Boxes in your Street

It is happening all over Johannesburg. Thieves break into electricity boxes, steal metal components and sell them to scrap dealers for a pittance. In the meantime affected residences are left without electricity for days on end… until City Power replaces the stolen parts.

What is the electricity box on the street called? A power box (USA) or feeder pillar (UK) is a cabinet for electrical equipment, mounted in the street and controlling the electrical supply to a number of houses in a neighborhood.

City Power used to secure the electricity boxes themselves. They designed and subsequently built a special spanner to close and open the boxes. City Power no longer secure their boxes in fact they tell residents to do it themselves… bad, bad service from City Power👎

Hi all, to the people in my street affected by the break in of our electricity box. City power came this afternoon and advised we contribute for a welder to secure our electrical box. Can we meet sometime to discuss. Thanks.

Gladys, Resident at No 5

An inept City Power!

Below, photos of an electricity box vandalized in our street a few days ago.

Thankfully, it is reasonably easy to secure these electricity boxes. All you need is a security bar/ rod and a padlock.
