It is happening all over Johannesburg. Thieves break into electricity boxes, steal metal components and sell them to scrap dealers for a pittance. In the meantime affected residences are left without electricity for days on end… until City Power replaces the stolen parts.
What is the electricity box on the street called? A power box (USA) or feeder pillar (UK) is a cabinet for electrical equipment, mounted in the street and controlling the electrical supply to a number of houses in a neighborhood.
City Power used to secure the electricity boxes themselves. They designed and subsequently built a special spanner to close and open the boxes. City Power no longer secure their boxes in fact they tell residents to do it themselves… bad, bad service from City Power👎
Hi all, to the people in my street affected by the break in of our electricity box. City power came this afternoon and advised we contribute for a welder to secure our electrical box. Can we meet sometime to discuss. Thanks.Gladys, Resident at No 5
An inept City Power!
Below, photos of an electricity box vandalized in our street a few days ago.
Thankfully, it is reasonably easy to secure these electricity boxes. All you need is a security bar/ rod and a padlock.
